More Fun Than Electric Eels on Your Back: Episode 10 - Alternative Medicine as a Coping Strategy

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Who doesn't like a Swedish Massage or targeted approaches to pressure points to alleviate pain and discomfort? Or maybe Chiropractic care, with spinal adjustments and TENS machines are more your cup of tea? Do fine needles strategically placed across your skin make you think of energy clearing Qi or pin cushion nightmares?

In this episode, we discuss our personal experiences with Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Acupressure and Chiropractic Medicine. We get into all the scientific backgrounds and the varieties each method targets for treatment.

Both of us absolutely love Massage Therapy. It helps with so many of our ailments and a bunch of others, as well as being incredibly relaxing. Unfortunately, most insurance companies don't foot the bill, so it can be an expensive method. We get into the different types of massage (the Swede prefers the Swedish and the American concurs). Deep tissue is a little too aggressive for our dainty asses. Speaking of asses, my piriformis muscle allows my sciatic nerve to flow directly THROUGH it, giving me a literal pain in the ass every time that nerve becomes inflamed. Fun times....

Acupressure is similar to massage except certain points along 14 different meridians connect to certain organs, and with shorter periods of pressure and time, can restore blocked energy channels, also known as qi (pronounced chee). (Please speak with a physician if you are pregnant, as there are certain points that are believed to induce labor. Again, fun times...) I found my experience with acupressure neutral. I cannot say that I had it regularly enough to give a thorough result.

Acupuncture is a big NO from Mita, as its main purpose "is to stimulate nerve rich areas of the skin surface" (P. Kempisty) and nerve pain is one of her big issues regarding Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS. Flares abound when she was treated with this method, so it was not a great fit for her. I used it for sciatic pain relief, and although it did bring feeling/sensation to areas of my leg where significant nerve damage was obtained, due to cost, I was unable to pay for this sometimes pricey treatment on a regular basis.

And finally, Chiropractic care. These people are "like the one stop shop, like Target," said Mita and I. This time, I was the Debbie Downer because I'm not down with hearing my spine snap (again). No to manual manipulations. Mita did find some relief and even purchased her own TENS machine. Listen in to hear about the earliest and wackiest forms of alternative medicine.
