Bling Brains, BeHeadings & The Pros and Cons of Social Media Creative Copes Season 1 Episode 9

Updated: Mar 15, 2023

In this episode, we discuss what color we think the anxiety in our brains would be. Just for a minute or two, but I think we decided on bling bling pink. Not being a hug fan of anything glitter, my brain figured it would be okay because I'm not a huge fan of anxiety either. Can you believe we are on the final episode of the single digits? Time flies when you're having fun.

Next, we did our physical and mental health check in. Did you know that Jen decided she has an extremely large head (macrocephaly) and that is why her new headphones are causing her irritation? Mita is recovering from cleaning her house two weeks ago. Post-exertional malaise is so inconvenient. And then we got off topic. Surprise, surprise...

Bringing us back to task, we begin by comparing our personal views on smartphones and social media in our own personal homes. Mita is "a little bit culty" (she loves that podcast) and believes that addictive behaviors brought on by FOMO is not something that she necessarily wants around her kiddos. I'm jealous because we caved. Remember the home phone and call waiting? That is the kind of OG street cred I still maintain. BOOM. At least the spies and aliens cannot spy on me, except Miss Mita tried "to ruin life for me" and confessed the cordless phones do it too. Smart phones reign supreme in the lives of teenagers. We cannot compete.

Social media has some strong arguments for why it is a good thing. Some of those include keeping family and friends connected, communities of like-minded individuals to share ideas, combat loneliness (especially during COVID isolation), keeping minds creative and self-expression in ways mental and physical limitations sometimes stifle. Negative opinions include causing anxiety, depression, body dysmorphia due to filters, can trigger loneliness and unacceptance, the web is a hotspot for cyber bullying and trolling, "keyboard warriors - people who say things online behind the safety of their computer screen that they most likely wouldn't have the balls to say to someone's face), increase of self-harm and suicidal ideation, and the list goes on....

Moderation is key. Reduce the time you are online, stay present in social situations, unfollow accounts that cause negative feelings, limit notifications and maintain life outside of the electronic devices. Humans are social creatures. Please try to do some of that socializing in person.

Love, light and balance on your smart device . xoxox, Jen ♥
